  • Hamilton Yacht Club celebrates 75 Years

    Hamilton Yacht Club celebrates its 75th Jubilee over April 12 and 13 coinciding with the closing regatta for the season. The Club has produced many champions despite operating on possibly the smallest piece of water in the country. Lake Rotoroa is 156 acres, nominally about the size of Westhaven, but the area available for sailing is considerably less, given the shallow areas around the shores and the areas best avoided because of wind shadows cast by trees.

    Adam Minoprio and his team of BlackMatch Racing have taken out the 2013 New Zealand National Keelboat Championship after two days of racing on the Waitamata Harbour.

  • RNZYS Harken Schools Regatta: Hutt International Boys lead on day one

    George Gautrey and his crew of Callum Pritchard, Dan McDowall and Jono Francis representing Hutt International Boys School from Heretaunga in Upper Hutt, take the lead on day one of the HARKEN Schools Regatta. With a total of 11 points overall the H.I.B.S Boys had an impressive 4 wins and 2 second places after a fantastic day on the water. Gautrey commented “It was a very good day; we started off well but had a few problems, then brought it together for the rest of the day.”
  • South Island 420 Championships, Naval Point Club, Lyttelton March 2-3

    Following their 2nd placing in the North Island 420 Champs in Napier two weeks earlier, Helm Taylor Burn and Crew, Henry Gibbs, won five of six races to take the South Island 420 Championships at the Naval Point Yacht Club, Lyttelton.

  • ISAF Sailing World Cup / Palma: Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre will test the Rio 2016 racing format

    The 44th edition of the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre for Olympic classes, the first European event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, has been chosen by ISAF to test the racing format to be used at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre, to be held in the bay of Palma from 30 March to 6 April with the participation of the top world sailors of Olympic and Paralympic classes, will use a new racing format combining innovation and simplicity and aims at having the fairest event possible following the request from ISAF.
  • Knight Frank South Island Young 88 Champs: Defending champ Milton Bloomfield wins again

    Defending champion Milton Bloomfield dominated at the Knight Frank Young 88 South Island Championship sailed on Lyttelton Harbour on 2nd and 3rd of March. Bloomfield, sailing Akaroa yacht Shibbeen (Humphrey Rolleston), won 4 of the 6 races to take the title for the third successive year. Richard Hawkins and his crew aboard Dunedin yacht Meltdown took second place, improving on their third placing in Akaroa last year. Flying Machine (Craig Edwards) was third in the contest - the ninth South Island event for the Young 88 Class.
  • New Zealand Multihull Boat Show 17th March Free Addmission

    The Boat Show is free admission to the public and is run on a volunteer basis, a gold coin donation is always welcome. Just by turning up members of the public could be in to win $150 worth of resin. The NZMYC owns & runs the Coastal Classic every year and as is run by volunteers, we base ourselves in the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and all the races and cruising events are run from the Club.

  • Ten teams line up for RNZYS HARKEN Schools Regatta 2013

    Ten teams of talented youth sailors from schools around New Zealand are descending on the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for this weekend’s HARKEN Schools Regatta. This event was established in 2007 by the then RNZYS Youth Committee as a great way to showcase the Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme amongst school age sailors in the wider Auckland region. Also at that time HARKEN New Zealand signed up as naming rights sponsor and has generously continued to support this growing event ever since.

  • Pleasant Point Yacht Club - Demolished after the Christchurch earthquakes but not destroyed

    Pleasant Point Yacht Club was due to open for its 89th year on September 5th 2010, but the events on the morning of the 4th put paid to that. The Clubhouse on Rat Island Reserve, beside the South Brighton bridge, was so badly damaged that only restricted access was possible and together with the state of the grounds, any idea of sailing our 2010/2011 season from that site quickly evaporated.

    Buzios, Brazil is hosting the 2013 RS:X World Championships and the regatta is heading into the business end with just one day of competition remaining featuring the top ten medal races. Both kiwi representatives, JP Tobin in the Men’s fleet and Natalia Kosinska in the Women’s have missed the cut for the medal race – Natalia by the narrowest of margins. After ten races she looks to have finished 11th overall just three points away from making her first World Champs medal race.

  • Steve Cranch: Coach Interview

    For those who do not know Steve, he has been coaching with Sailability Auckland and the Paralympic sailors for the last 4 years. Steve coaches from LTS level out of Westhaven through to travelling around the World with the Skud and Sonar sailors. Last year Steve was part of the NZL Paralympic team that went to London. Steve has just returned from Miami where he was coaching Team RIO Gold New Zealand Paralympic Sailing.

    The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Auckland to Musket Cove, Fiji Race is now less than three months away. The word is that the fleet is shaping up to include a wide range of boats of different performance characteristics, from the 11m Lew Anne, up to the likes of TeamVodafoneSailing and a youth challenge organized by the New Zealand Sailing Trust, aboard Lion New Zealand.

  • Kerikeri Cruising Club reports on the 470 National Champs

    Kerikeri Cruising Club in the Bay of Islands hosted the 470 National Championship over 1st – 3rd March. Lesley Haslar from Kerikeri Cruising Club reports on the regatta… Nine eager pairs on the 470 class sail boats battled across the start line in each of the ten races off from Kerikeri Cruising Club in the Bay of islands. Day one Harris Bindon and Alexander Bryning (local Kerikeri boat #43) said “the wind was up and down today and we had a few breakages, let’s hope that doesn’t happen again. One of our goals is to beat my local mate Ned Dalbeth-Hudson on #21” - and they did.
  • Sailability Taranaki launch new Access dinghies

    Sailability Taranaki launched four new 303 Access dinghies and an inflatable rescue boat on Sunday 3rd March with a large group turning out to have a go. The day was a huge success with the Waitara Boating Club venue producing a nice breeze, flat water and great viewing for the parents and public, and a steady flow of participants.

    At the 470 Nationals we had nine boats from Tauranga, Manly, Auckland and Kerikeri taking part. Kerikeri Cruising Club was a wonderful host club with a small core of friendly helpers. Water and cell phone coverage was short, and we didn't have access to internet, but that was more than compensated for by kiwi's running around on the lawn, dolphins playing around the boats and having sailing celebrity Torben Grael in our midst.

  • 2013 Women’s Match Racing Champs: Pyatt takes the title

    Susannah Pyatt (RNZYS) and her team of Jenna Hansen, Olivia Powrie and Heather Trudgen, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, win the New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Championships 2013! About the win Pyatt commented, “We are pretty ecstatic actually; I can’t stop smiling, we did it!” Pyatt claims the Leith Mossman Memorial Trophy for 2013. Pyatt won 2 out of 3 races against Melinda Henshaw (RNZYS) in the Semi Finals, despite losing the first race to Henshaw by 40 seconds; the biggest margin of the semis.
  • 2013 Women’s Match Racing Champs: Osborne retains lead on day two

    Samantha Osborne (RNZYS) retains the lead on day two of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Championships 2013. As with the previous day, second highest ranked skipper in the event, Osborne won all of her six races by good margins. Osborne’s win against 2nd place holder Susannah Pyatt was by a margin of 26 seconds. Osborne commented, “Today we were more confident, more clinical; we learnt a lot yesterday and today we were able to capitalize on it. Today felt a lot more fluid.”

  • 2013 Women’s Match Racing Champs: Osborne leads on day one

    Representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Samantha Osborne leads on Day One of the New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Championships 2013. Samantha Osborne, the second highest ranked skipper in the event with an ISAF Ranking of 95, enjoyed six wins in all of her six races, including a nail biting 1 second win over 2nd place holder Hannah Osborne (no connection).

    Northland Sailing… Have a Go! Instructor Reuben Corbett had a big week out at the Albany Junior High Camp at Shakespeare Bay on the Whangaparoa Peninsula. Reuben and a few helpers, Woo Yeong, Sylvie Admore, along with Charlie Baillie Strong and Kim Admore from Yachting New Zealand, guided over 180 students through a modified Sailing… Have a Go! program.

    Isaac McHardie and Micah Wilkinson have been selected to represent New Zealand in the SL16 at the 2013 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships on from 13-20 July in Limmasol, Cyprus. Pairing up at the start of the season Isaac and Micah have gone from strength to strength demonstrating massive performance gains as they build their partnership, despite an injury set-back early in the summer when Micah broke his arm.
