New Zealand’s top Olympic skiff sailors and windsurfers are racing in their respective European Championship Regattas with competition getting underway in Arhus, Denmark and Brest, France overnight. At this early stage the best placed of the kiwis are Natalia Kosinska lying 2nd in the Women’s RS:X European Championships in France, and Alex Maloney and Molly Meech (pictured) in 3rd overall at the end of the opening day at the 49erFX European Championships in Denmark.

The E5.9 Association has announced a major new fleet development initiative - the series build of at least six new Elliott 5.9's. This project has been over a year in the planning and is being underwritten by several current owners and the E5.9 Class Association on a cost recovery basis. We are now back home in New Zealand for a few weeks before we head back over to France for our World Championships which will take place in La Rochelle from the 5th of August. Our first trip of the year went rather well overall, we had some great racing as well as some rather cool sightseeing, so it was the perfect way to get back onto the circuit and clean out a bit of rust!!

Two New Zealand Nacra 17 crews including Jason Saunders and Gemma Jones, and Tomer Simhony and Nicole Van der Velden are counting down for the upcoming World Championships. Having just completed Kiel Week both crews and are en route to Den Haag, the Netherlands to set up for three weeks training before the Nacra 17 World Championships.

New controls have been introduced to stop damage to our marine environment from toxic paints used as protective coatings on ships and other vessels, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) announced today. Known as antifouling paints, they are applied to the hulls of vessels and to objects submerged in water to prevent aquatic organisms, or biofoul, from building up on the surface. They provide biosecurity protection from the introduction and transfer of indigenous and non-indigenous species in and around New Zealand waters as well as help to maintain a boat’s performance and integrity.

Reuben Corbett (NZL) has won the ISAF Grade 2 Pärnu Sailing Week in Estonia, defeating Marek Stanczyk (POL) in the final.

I have just returned home from my 100-day stint overseas, competing in seven events during that time in Oman, Europe and the UK. It was an awesome time made up of top quality competitions, solid weeks of training with foreigners, and some great times had with mates on the circuit.

Taking out today’s medal race at the 2013 470 European Championships in Formia, Italy the NZL Sailing Team women’s 470 pair of Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie have secured the Silver Medal. Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox have finished 8th overall in the Men’s Open 470 European Championship – another strong result for this new partnership.

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie will head into the final day of the 2013 470 European Championships in 3rd place and looking good for a medal, but with a challenge on to make it silver or gold. New Zealand will also be represented in the Men’s medal race with Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox (pictured above) sailing away with a win today and lying 7th overall. The regatta, which has attracted a full contingent of the world’s best Olympic campaigners in the double-handed 470 class, has just one day to run in Formia, Italy. Conditions were light at the venue today and after a postponement just one race was possible.

WRIGHTY my world, my boats, and eighty years is the autobiographical story of Alan Wright, New Zealand’s most popular keelboat designer. The book begins with Alan Wright’s childhood years in Auckland and then on the family farm at Ngatea, building tin canoes, sailing P Class on the Piako River, his boatbuilding apprenticeship at the Naval Dockyard and his experiences in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Sam Meech has secured his first EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup victory winning gold in the Laser class at the 2013 Sail for Gold Regatta which has just wrapped up in Weymouth, England. New Zealand featured twice in the top four of the Laser fleet with Andy Maloney finishing just outside the podium places in 4th.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust’s 55m tall ship Lord Nelson, which was purpose-built to be sailed by physically disabled and able-bodied people, is sailing around the world. This is the first time that an accessible tall ship has undertaken such a journey.
