  • Team Jolly Campaign Update: EuroSaf 2013: Garda – Nice way to start!

    We got to Riva del Garda – at the north end of Garda Lake on the 2nd of May, and as luck would have it the Italian 470 National Championships were scheduled to take place two days after we arrived.. so we entered and took part as a bit of a warm up to the EuroSaf event which we had come here for (or cool down as it is absolutely freezing on the water here).

  • Triple Gold for the NZL Sailing Team at EUROSAF Regatta, Garda

    New Zealand has sailed away with three gold medals at Vela Garda Trentino – the first of five regattas in the inaugural EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup. The five day regatta wrapped up overnight in picturesque Lake Garda, Italy where yet another new format for scoring was being trialled.

    UK sailmakers have created a rules quiz programme explaining some of the key rules in yacht racing. The quiz programme has a free demo, afterwards you can buy the programme containing over 30 rules scenarios. Clicking on the video, will play out the race situation.   • Plimmerton Hosts round Mana Island Regatta

    The annual round Mana Island Trailer yacht series was held from Plimmerton Boating Club (PlBC) on Sunday 14 April. The series is traditionally an interclub feature but with the general demise of interclub trailer yacht racing in the Wellington region has not recently attracted outside entries. Nevertheless a fleet of 10 yachts turned up on the starting line, reflecting the strength of the division at PBC and the way it has developed over the last few years.

  • Fiji Race: Teens take on ocean race in fleet's smallest boat

    One of the world’s oldest and harshest extreme sports, ocean racing is a challenge too tough for most adults, but 18 year old Cory McLennan of Greymouth (pictured), and 16 year old Edwin Delaat of Auckland, will team up to race Cory’s boat, Atom Ant, in the Royal New Zealand Auckland to Musket Cove, Fiji Ocean Race starting on 1 June.

    It was a come from behind win, but KeriKeri High School again showed that they have what it takes to win the Secondary School Teams Racing Nationals, sailed last week on Lake Taupo.
  • Sailing... Have A Go! season ends

    The Sailing... Have a Go! programme has now come to an end for the 2012/2013 season. Our instructors and students made the most of the great summer for Sailing around the country with over 3500 students taking part. Paul Moriarty our Central Region instructor described it as “a great season to be a Sailing instructor”. Throughout the season 97 different schools took part at 54 different Yacht Clubs.

    The New Zealand Olympic Committee is to amalgamate staff and resources in Auckland as part of its commitment to New Zealand sports and athletes. The move for the head office from Wellington will take place over a period of eight months with Secretary General Kereyn Smith set to take up residence in Auckland in June.

  • Secondary Schools Teams Racing Nationals Day 4 - Light winds delay racing

    Light winds forced a delayed start and early finish to day four of the Secondary Schools Teams Racing Nationals. When racing finally got underway it was all action for Round Robin 3. All teams in the Gold Fleet have completed 4 races and it is KeriKeri and Mahurangi that lead the way with 4 wins each, Marlborough Boys and Tauranga share 3 wins. In a change of form both Lindsfarne and Westlake Boys are both struggling with the one win, whilst newcomers to the gold fleet from Wednesday’s repo charge Napier girls have scored a vital win over Kings College.

    Following the Palma World Cup event concluding, we stayed on in Palma and did a few days of cycling and general fitness work. We joined up with some other Laser sailors and did three days of riding, on all different sides of the island. The roads were awesome to ride on, racing up some big mountains, cruising through cool small European towns built on the waters edge and the daily lunch stop were all highlights of our ‘Palma cycle tour’.
