Survey on Life Jacket regulations in Auckland – have you say…

Issue date

Auckland Council is conducting a Survey on the wearing of personal flotation devices (life jackets) – get on-line and have your say.

This from Auckland Council…

We are reviewing the regulations around the wearing of life jackets onboard smaller recreational vessels (below 6m). Please tell us your thoughts by completing the online survey and go into the draw to win a life jacket. Survey closes on Friday 31 May 2013.

Current regulations

Current regulations require the person in charge of a recreational vessel to always carry correctly fitting life jackets for everyone onboard within easy reach.

Life jackets must be worn where bad weather, rough seas, tides, visibility, emergencies or other situations cause danger or a risk to the safety of people onboard.

This rule does not apply in a number of situations, for example:

  • for an unpowered vessel e.g. surfboard, or
  • a windsurfer wearing a wetsuit, or
  • a person training, or
  • a person participating in a sporting event.
