David’s Desk May 2013: An update from the Chief Executive

Issue date

Dear members, We’re into May and while the sailing and cruising season is winding down for many, there is still plenty going on here at Yachting New Zealand. Here’s an update…

  • 2013 Yacht Club Survey – terrific response, thank you! First up I want to say a big thank you to Yacht Clubs which have provided a completed 2013 Yacht Club Survey return to us, I know it takes some time and effort and I really appreciate your cooperation. There are just a few left outstanding on the list of returns and we’ll be in touch with you to ask you to give this your attention as soon as possible.
  • Get on board with our team… I’ve donated already, check out the video here and pledge your support too. A group of New Zealand’s top youth sailors have an opportunity to compete at the first ever Youth Americas Cup Regatta in September 2013 - and they need your support to help them win it for New Zealand. We’ve started an online crowd-funding campaign to generate some funds for this team of under 24 year olds: the NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand.
  • Need Travel Insurance? I would like to draw your attention to the travel insurance offer from ACE Travel Insurance available to members of Yachting New Zealand affiliated clubs through yachtingnz.org.nz. As a member you can now purchase ACE Travel Insurance for specially negotiated premiums. This is the first of a collection of discount offers which will become available through the Yachting New Zealand website which we’ll let you know about as they become available over coming months.
  • Organisational ‘health check’… At Yachting New Zealand we’re using the Organisational Development Tool (ODT) to review once again, just how we’re getting on. The organisation first undertook this review process with the help of Sport NZ around three years ago and I saw it as timely for an update on our progress. The ODT is also available to yacht clubs, and I’d encourage you to take up the opportunity – get in touch with Participation and Development Manager, Andrew Clouston on andrew@yachtingnz.org.nz
  • In Auckland May 16-19th? Don’t miss Sailing Central at Hutchwilco Boat Show…The Sailing Central Hall is going to be better and more interactive than ever this year with a range of class associations and some yacht clubs taking up the opportunity to promote sailing to the public through the 2013 Hutchwilco Boat Show. Yachting New Zealand will be present throughout as a significant participant in the Sailing Central Hall – get along if you’re in Auckland.

Kind regards
David Abercrombie
