First day of finals racing completed. Tough day at the office as they say.
Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders have delivered an encouraging top ten result at the first ever Nacra 17 World Championship ending the regatta in 9th place. Across eight races sailed the kiwis were in the top ten in five of those and if the final day had provided wind they were within reach of further improving their final placing.

The final day of racing has produced a mix of highs and lows. We were hoping for three races today but by mid morning it was evident we'd struggle for two. The race committee decided not to sail early which may have been a pity as a nice peler breeze stayed in until about 11am.
The course was tight with rocks, current and gusts coming off the city turning the racing into a game of snakes and ladders at times. Two wild card teams joined the regatta and both will be competing in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup. The teams were the Swiss and the local team from Portugal. It was exciting to line up against two of the teams we will be racing in September!
The second day of final races brought some up and down results for most of the top teams, testament to how tough racing has got in the gold fleet battle.
Dave was a coach for Tom Ashley in the build up to Tom becoming Olympic champion in 2008. Dave then coached Tom and the womens RSX squad leading up to the 2012 Olympics and recently he has been coaching the RSX youth team, 49er FX and 49er sailors.
Q) How did you get into coaching?
A) I started at 16 with Optimists at my local club and really enjoyed it. I then progressed into coaching the Techno class, attending the Worlds as a coach on a PM scholarship. When I finished competing, Tom asked me to coach him in the RSX windsurfer.
Tactics in sailing are a difficult enough subject, but even harder to explain as a coach to your sailors in training. Especially training in a small group, trying to replicate the decision making of sailing a fleet. Mark Rushall’s Tactics book is an excellent read with plenty of pictures and diagrams to help visualize real life situations.

New Zealand teams, Australia teams, New Caledonia teams are giving their expression of interest. Last Year Chris Steele from Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron won the event.
‘Bring on the summer!’… That was the feeling as the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail Coaching Course came to a close during the weekend of 20th and 21st July at Hamilton Yacht Club.

Andrew Murdoch (pictured) has secured his first medal at a major international Finn regatta with bronze at the 2013 Finn European Championship just finished in Warnemunde, Germany. New Zealand boasts two top five finishers at the Championship with Josh Junior concluding the regatta in 5th place.

Lying 9th Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders have earned a start in the top ten line up medal race at the inaugural Nacra 17 World Championship in the Netherlands.
A top performance from Chile’s Nadja Horwitz/Carmina Malsch in the 420 Ladies secured them two race wins, whilst best performance of the day in the 420 Open went to Spain’s José Manuel Ruiz/Fernando Davila who scored a 2,3.

The 2013 Finn European Championship on now in Warnemunde, Germany has hit the midway mark and with six races sailed New Zealanders Josh Junior and Andrew Murdoch both feature in the top five sailors after another solid day on the water.
The Opening Ceremony of the 2013 420 World and Ladies World Championships in Valencia, Spain conclude with a bang last night as a traditional fireworks display wrapped up the parade of nations and arrival of the official 420 Championship and Spanish flags by water in two 420s.
