David’s Desk: July 2013

Issue date

Dear members

Who should lead our sport?

Yachting New Zealand’s Board of Directors are volunteer trustees who represent the interests of stakeholders, and are entrusted to ensure that Yachting New Zealand is soundly managed. In short, the job they do is critically important.

The Board is comprised of nine Directors, five of which are elected by members, so you play an important part in determining who leads our sport through the nomination and election process. The 2013 Yachting New Zealand Annual General Meeting, to be held on 19th October, will see the election of two positions on the Board of Directors.

Nomination forms will be posted to yacht clubs shortly and I urge you to open up this discussion at your club, give thought to who you know that has skills and expertise to offer, and have a say in who leads our sport into the future.

Please get in touch with me by phoning the Yachting New Zealand office if you want to know more about the nomination and election process.

Constitutional changes accepted in 2012 mean that Yacht Clubs have received their affiliation fee invoice earlier than usual with a payment deadline of September 30th. It’s great to see that a couple of clubs have done the paperwork and are fully paid up, thanks very much I appreciate your cooperation.

South Island

I am looking forward to the South Island Commodore’s Conference which is now just a few weeks away on 17th August. Registrations have been excellent and the event will gather together an exciting group of individuals who put in the hard yards at our member yacht clubs in the South Island.

The Conference provides a unique opportunity for everyone to share ideas and to learn.

Talking Strategy

Later in August Andrew Clouston and I will be out around the country catching up with Clubs and Commodores to present to you the 2013-16 Strategic Plan which will guide us into a new era for Yachting New Zealand.

Here are the dates and venues…

17th August – Christchurch (SI Commodores Conference)

19th August – Rotorua YC (Waikato/Thames and BOP clubs)

20th August – New Plymouth YC (Western Districts Clubs)

21st August – Wellington/RPYNC (Wellington Clubs)

22nd August – Napier SC (East Coast Clubs)

TBD – Opua CC (Northland Clubs)

TBD – Onerahi YC (Northland Clubs)

TBD – Auckland Clubs

Support for Coastal Classic

A significant proportion of our members are keelboat and multihull sailors and the domestic event that gathers together the largest and widest fleet for a coastal race is the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club’s Coastal Classic Auckland to Russell Yacht Race in October. I am really pleased to announce that Yachting New Zealand is supporting this great event in 2013.

Congratulations to our NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team

Finally I’d offer my congratulations the 2013 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team who put in an outstanding performance at the 2013 ISAF Youth World Championships in Cyprus this month. To Isaac and Micah on your gold medal, to Markus and Jack on your bronze and to the entire team who contributed to an excellent showing in this year’s Nations Trophy.

Kind regards
David Abercrombie
