What will your club be doing next Auckland Anniversary Day?

Issue date

Planning time! Help us make Ports of Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta, the biggest one day regatta in the world again!

Did you know that our Regatta is the country's oldest sporting event, even older than the America's Cup? We are really excited about the build up to the 175th anniversary of this terrific event (which is in Jan 2015) and so we at the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Inc are working really hard to boost and grow the event from 2014 onwards, not only by involving more sailing and yachting clubs, but by including different watersports too. Our goal is to make the event officially the biggest one day regatta in the world and with the help of our new major sponsors, Ports of Auckland, we are upping the ante to try to make sure this happens.

How can your club be involved?

  • Clubs and classes can hold racing on Anniversary Weekend or Anniversary Day (27 January 2014)
  • If you already race that day/weekend, consider becoming a part of the Regatta.
  • If possible, include the event in your points series
  • Think about holding a Try Sailing / Boating type day that weekend and also think about activities all the family can enjoy, like old fashioned three legged races, rowing races, and sand castle building competitions

What you get:

  • Marketing and promotional support for the event, which usually gets quite a bit of attention from TV, radio, and newspapers
  • For keeler and multihull classes taking part in the Waitemata Harbour, all the race management is done, so all you need to do is turn up and enjoy yourself
  • A terrific prizegiving is organised by the AAR. We have over $80,000 worth (at insurable value) of trophies, plus prize money and more.
  • We can provide practical help and promotional support for specific activites such as Try Boating days... which are proven as a great way to get new people into your club or group and be a great initiative for community relations

Please table this email at your next Committee meeting and contact Joyce Talbot and Zoe Hawkins to discuss your plans. Our Committee are really enthusiastic and we'll get behind your plans.
