    New Zealand will feature in the medal races at both the 2013 Finn European Championship and the 2013 Nacra 17 World Championship with kiwi Finn sailors Andrew Murdoch (pictured) and Josh Junior among a tight group who will battle it out for the lower podium spot in Germany. Lying 9th Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders have earned a start in the top ten line up medal race at the inaugural Nacra 17 World Championship in the Netherlands.

    It was a slow start to the 2013 Open and Junior European Championship in Warnemünde, Germany as the sailors waited patiently onshore all day as the wind failed to stabilize at anything more than a paltry 4 knots. It was finally abandoned for the day at 17.00.
  • Earthquake Building Repairs to the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club

    Post-earthquake repairs are underway at the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club and are expected to be completed around three months from now. “The Waimakariri Sailing and Powerboat Club will be the first Christchurch yacht club to start their earthquake repairs,” explains Regional Support Officer Kate Spackman. “With high tides now flooding the boat sheds underneath the club house the repairs will see the building lifted as well as repaired.”
  • Nacra 17 Worlds: Day racing today at the Hague

    All racing was cancelled today in the Nacra 17 Worlds in Scheveningen, The Hague. This morning at 10 AM the AP flag (postponement) was hoisted for both fleets, yellow and blue. In the afternoon a light sea breeze seemed to be coming in and the yellow fleet left the beach. Once in the starting area the wind was gone again and the multihulls couldn't even sail against the current. At 4 PM the committee decided to send the boats back to the beach, but still hoped for wind. At 6.30 PM the verdict came: all races cancelled for the day.

    Day 2 of the teams racing was a good day for our NZL International Yachting Trust Optiworlds team despite being narrowly beaten in both of their races by a very tight margin and strong teams - the last race lost on count-back.

    Following three days of registration, measurement and preparation racing begins at the 2013 Finn Open and Junior European Championships in Warnemünde, Germany on Monday. At the close of registration, 103 Finns were confirmed as entered, including 16 juniors, making this the largest Finn Europeans of all time.

    Another stunning morning greeted us in Lake Garda - bright sun and a warm 28degrees with the Peler breeze - quite strong (which is not that good for the afternoon Ora breeze as it has to work harder to push the Peler breeze away). The team starts each day at 8 with a light fitness session then after breakfast are all down at the club by 10.00am to set up their boats.

    With one day to go New Zealand is assured of a gold medal at the 2013 Sail First ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships now drawing to a close in Cyprus with Isaac McHardie (Hamilton Yacht Club/RAYC) and Micah Wilkinson (Ngaroto Sailing Club/RAYC) now unbeatable in the SL16 multihull. Across the other four classes where the 2013 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team feature, our sailors remain in the top seven places with Markus Somerville and Jack Simpson (Wakatere Boating Club) now in 2nd place and eyeing a podium finish in the 29er skiff. Just one day remains with only one race on the schedule to determine the final placings.

    Day two of the Optimist World Champs has had a mix of highs and lows. The wind ran pretty much to forecast with a shifty and slight Ora breeze of 12 knots lasting for most of the first race of the day, it was a race where mother nature played her part and despite all of the kiwis starting well and rounding the top mark in a good position in each of their respective flights (there are four flights), only Leonard Takahashi-Fry managed a top ten placing. The rest of the team lost ground on their downwind and final upwinds as the shifts became even more variable.

They are the NZL Sailing Team with ETNZ and in six weeks time it will be their turn to take to the stunning San Francisco Bay for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup and race the fast, exciting AC45 catamarans on the same race track that their senior counterparts are competing on now.
