Monday 25th January saw the completion of the three day Starling National Match Racing Championship in which each province sends a representative in the quest for National honours in New Zealand’s premier youth class.

Murrays Bay Sailing Club is hosting 2016 Oceanbridge Sail Auckland from the 24-28 February and you can be part of the action - they need volunteers!

Bay of Islands Sailing Week regatta - which started with registration yesterday - Tuesday 26th January - is underway.

Wellington again turned it on for the final day of the 2016 Woodridge Homes NZ Laser Nationals at Muritai Yacht Club in Wellington. A light breeze greeted the 92 sailors as they arrived at the club and some of us were led to believe that the local Masters “we don’t do Light” was a Wellington myth.

Congratulations to the NZL Sailing Team’s Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox on taking out the 2016 470 National Championship over Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie.

Auckland’s Anniversary Day celebrates the founding of the province and all yachts are invited to take part in this year's annual regatta on Monday Feb 1st, whether it be in a harbour race or a passage race.

So, yes, it is now 2016, less than seven months until a little regatta in August that we have been looking forward to for the last three years… Time moves rather quickly, and hopefully so do we!

With the calendar switched to an Olympic year, the intensity on the water at the 2016 Sailing World Cup Miami presented by Sunbrella is a match for the famously bright South Florida sun. In less than 200 days, many of the nearly 800 sailors gathered in Coconut Grove this week will walk in the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games. 

After a small delay while the wind settled in the morning we enjoyed a full days racing with a fresh NW all day gusting up to the high 20’s and a steep chop providing a solid test for everyone. Racing was again right out the front of the club, with the bottom mark only 100m off the wharf providing fantastic viewing for the spectators on shore. With 4 races completed for the Open fleets and 3 for the Masters the program is back on track with one day remaining.

Day 2 of the Woodbridge Homes Laser Nationals at Muritai Yacht Club in Wellington turned on a fantastic days sailing with a full complement of races, including a catch up race from day 1. After losing yesterday’s racing due to high winds, and the Met Service predicting 40 knots this afternoon, sailors arrived at the club hoping for the best but fearing another lost day. But thankfully the wind cooperated and we enjoyed a wonderful days racing. 

A team of NZL 420s took to sailing in Australia over December and January - making the most of the wide range of conditions that Melbourne and Sydney can deliver as well as the large and competitive fleets that Australia has in their youth classes.

Expressions of interest are sought from “Wellington Region” Clubs who have interest to host the 2017 420 Nationals.

With the start of 2016 Volvo Sailing and Boating Week just over three weeks away yachting and boating clubs around New Zealand are gearing up to welcome in the public, and to showcase and celebrate our sport.

This month Miami, Florida plays host to many of the world’s best Olympic and Paralympic sailors when Sailing World Cup Miami gets underway on Monday 25th January.

Today (eds. Monday 18 January) marks 200 days to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero and as the pressure comes on sports and athletes New Zealand Olympic Team Chef de Mission Rob Waddell says New Zealanders can look forward to an outstanding Olympic year.

Racing in light winds on the last day of the Hartley 16 National Championships in New Plymouth saw the local crew of Simon Holdt and Nathan McArthur on Stratos move from third place overnight to win the regatta ahead of defending champions Shaking Laundry sailed by Robin Williams and Mike Insley. Third place went to Bizzare’s Gareth Insley and Tim Lynch-Blosse both from the Manukau Yacht Club in Auckland.

There is a strong and still growing entry list for the NZ Laser Nationals at Muritai Yacht Club on Wellington Harbour. Racing is scheduled from Friday 22nd till Monday 25th January 2016, with 2 or 3 races scheduled for each of the 4 days.

Now this is good; the Tornados enjoyed their nationals here so much last year that they are returning to the bay.

It’s time to begin planning your entry for the 2016 NZ Open Keelboat National Championships.

The 2016 NZ Women’s Keelboat Championships will be held on the 2nd & 3rd of April 2016 and will be run by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

Forget pigs - it'll be flying cats that take centre stage at the Bay of Islands Sailing Week regatta during the last week of January 2016.  A new generation of super-fast flying catamarans is expected to launch the popular annual regatta into a new era of yacht racing.

World Sailing has appointed Andy Hunt, former CEO of the British Olympic Association and a non-executive Director of the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games as its new Chief Executive Officer.
