A record fleet of 83 sailors is lining up for the annual AIMS GAMES Anchor Regatta.  An impressive, 42 competitors lined up for last year’s inaugural event, so a doubling of the fleet for the event in its second year is an impressive achievement and testament to the excellent reputation of the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club in running events.

It was a momentous day for the NZL Sailing Team in Rio yesterday when four New Zealand crews sailed their Olympic medal races in phenomenal sailing conditions under the spotlight of the world’s sports fans and media.

Alex Maloney and Molly Meech have won Olympic Silver at their first Games appearance in a thrilling 49erFX medal race showdown which closed out the Rio 2016 Regatta.

Today Peter Burling and Blair Tuke’s four year goal to win Olympic Gold came to fruition as they stood atop the podium on Rio’s Flamenco Beach and were presented their medals.

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie have won Olympic Silver at Rio 2016 today and join an elite group of kiwi sailors with two Olympic medals to their name.

After the chaos of Tuesday, when fifteen races were sailed across seven events including three medal races, Wednesday’s schedule looked light – just two medal races for the Women’s and Men’s 470.

However the wind didn’t show up and both Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, and Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox will come back and try again tomorrow. 

First-time Olympian Sam Meech has won Olympic Bronze in the Laser class pushing off challenges from five-time Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt (BRA) and reigning world champion Nick Thompson (GBR) with a solid medal race performance in Rio today.

Sam Meech will wait another day to sail for an Olympic podium finish after today’s medal race was postponed and then abandoned late in the afternoon in Rio 2016. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have stepped out their lead in the 49er event with one day, (three races) of qualifying to go and women’s skiff pair Alex Maloney and Molly Meech hold 2nd place on a tightly bunched 49erFX leader-board.

After a successful IRC Nationals hosted at Bay of Islands Race week earlier this year, it has been confirmed that Bay Week will again host this prestigious event in 2017 (24-27 January).

With two sports already sold out and three more nearing capacity, Sailing competitors should register now for World Masters Games 2017 to secure their places.

Sam Meech will go into the Olympic Laser Medal Race well placed for a bronze after winning the final fleet race in the men’s single-handed fleet at Rio 2016.

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have returned a perfect score-card on day one of Rio 2016 and take the early lead in the 49er event. 

A protest decision has seen Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie disqualified from race one in the Women’s 470 at Rio 2016. 

Both New Zealand 470 sailing crews have opened their Rio 2016 campaign with good results on a day that provided challenging and wide-ranging conditions.

Elsewhere, like many of the top sailors competing here in Rio today, the kiwis found the day demanding.  

Two New Zealanders sailed on day two of the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Regatta including Sam Meech who has climbed into third overall with a couple of great races.

Sam Meech has opened his first Olympic regatta sailing two races today on Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro to lie 6th overall in the Laser event.

We are sad to note the passing of Gary Corkin. Gary has contributed an enormous amount to the sport and will be missed by many. 

Sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have been named as co-captains of the New Zealand Olympic Team and will together lead the kiwi contingent into the Maracanã Stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games. 

The Women's Two-Person Dinghy (470) fleet at Rio 2016 will be a wide open game and a number of teams will start racing on 10 August believing they have what it takes to succeed.
