  • STACK Winter Champs: Winter season to close on a high for young sailors this weekend

    Around 300 sailors will hit the water in the next three days for the Stack Winter Champs 2013 at Murrays Bay Yacht Club in Auckland’s North Shore, just as a high settles over the country. “The forecast is for light breezes, making for a challenging regatta for sailors and race management,” says the club’s Commodore, David Gunn, also owner of sponsor company Stack Interiors.

    New Zealand’s Olympic class sailors have pulled off an unprecedented result at the 2013 49er and 49erFX World Championships which wrapped up overnight in Marseille, France with two world titles and a silver medal. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have secured their first ever 49er World title, while Alex Maloney and Molly Meech have won the inaugural 49erFX world title. And Marcus Hansen and Josh Porebski have won silver in the 49er.

After four days of super light and tricky winds in Marseille, France the breeze finally kicked in for the penultimate day of the six day regatta and the kiwis truly came to the fore.

    Our new Junior Sailing Programme has commenced. Andrew Brown of Force Racing has been brought in to design our sailing programme with the volunteer team at Maraetai Sailing Club. We have newly trained volunteer coaches taking the level one beginner sailors on Sundays which has seen an increase of registrations and is now full thanks to the Americas Cup racing.

    The 2013 49er and 49erFX World Championships continued in Marseille, France, with New Zealand crews now sitting in 3rd and 4th in the 49er and in 10th in the 49erFX. Despite light and tricky sailing conditions of only four to five knots on day two of the six day regatta Peter Burling and Blair Tuke managed consistency across all three races sailed to lift their overall standing up to 4th drawing equal on points to team-mates Marcus Hansen and Josh Porebski who also produced three solid results.

    Many of our yacht clubs operate slipways. Slipways, when not operated correctly can be dangerous. As a result of an incident on Auckland’s North Shore earlier this year, where three people were badly hurt, Maritime New Zealand have release a list of recommendations about safe management of slipways. Clubs should read the following story and ensure that their procedure take in to account the recommendations.
