  • NZ 420 Update: Oceania Champs

    The NZ 420 Association are very pleased to be holding the 2016 420 Oceania Championship, with a training clinic beforehand, in New Zealand at Auckland’s Wakatere Boating Club over 5/6 June. The clinic and regatta is on the edge of the waters to be used later in the year for World Sailing’s 2016 Youth World Championship, which is being hosted by Yachting New Zealand.

  • The Mighty P-Class; A Pictorial History

    Here is a great combined slide show and video clip about New Zealand’s mighty P-Class featuring images and footage from the 1920s to 2013. 

    15 minutes long, the clip has been assembled by class expert and historian Gun Caundle, from photos collected while researching for his book ‘Our Secret Weapon’, a history and stories about the P Class.

    Two sailors have been announced today to join the New Zealand Olympic Team to Rio 2016 with Josh Junior named in the Finn class and Sam Meech in the Laser class.

    Today’s announcement brings the New Zealand Olympic sailing team to 12 athletes, competing across seven events.

  • Marauder 8.4 Class Championship

    The Marauder 8.4 Class Championship will be held the 14th and 15th May. The races are to start near Northern Leading marker out in the Waitemata Harbour.

    This year a large fleet of the popular Alan Wright designed 8.4metre Marauder yachts are entered for the competition. The event is being co-organized by the Marauder 8.4 Owners Association and the Richmond Yacht Club. Division 1 has many entered and should be an exciting race. Mahita’s skipper has never entered a Marauder regatta before therefore his crew is an unknown quantity.

    Well, the incredible run of fine weather we have had has finally taken a small pause, but there is no pause to action out on the water!!! . The summer of 2015 – 16 will go down as the best ever at Wellington Ocean Sports, with the largest number of participants getting involved that we have ever had. Demand is high, but there are still places available on our up and coming courses. As we all know, in Wellington you can get good days any time of the year (and bad days too truth be known), and we have many exciting course scheduled over the next few months.     Eli Liefting and Rose Dickson finished second overall at the 2015 Inaugural NZL National Feva Championship, but this year, they claimed the title with six guns from seven races. Their worst result was a second in race one which they were able to drop.

    New Zealand has won gold in the 49er and silver in the Laser at the 2016 Sailing World Cup Hyeres.

    Peter Burling and Blair Tuke had their medal secure before starting today’s medal race, Sam Meech’s silver came after a dramatic on water tussle.

    The five-day regatta wrapped up today in France under stormy skies with a breeze that went from brisk to bust.

    New Zealand also collected two medal race victories with both Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie in the women’s 470 and Andy Maloney in the Laser finishing on a high note.
