Yachting NZ pays tribute to 'remarkable' Simon Smith

Issue date

Yachting New Zealand has paid tribute to Simon Smith, the sailor who died tragically in an incident during the Coastal Classic race on Friday night.

Smith was a teacher at Westlake Boys’ High School in Auckland for more than 30 years and an experienced sailor and coach. He leaves behind his wife and three children.

Yachting New Zealand chief executive David Abercrombie said the sailing community was mourning his death.

“I knew Simon from my time at Westlake Boys and he was a remarkable person and a much-loved teacher, husband, father and friend,” Abercrombie said.

“I have reached out to his family and our thoughts remain with all of Simon’s loved ones who have been affected by this.”

The incident is a tragic reminder of the risks associated with the sport, Abercrombie said.

All participants in yacht races in New Zealand are required to obtain relevant safety certification, depending on the type of racing they are undertaking.

Category 3 certification is required prior to the start of events like the Coastal Classic, where races are across open water, most of which is relatively protected or close to shorelines.

It requires boats to be designed and built to criteria to help minimise the risk of an accident and to be in a seaworthy condition. The skipper of the boat must also have a minimum level of experience and knowledge.

In case of an accident, boats are required to carry the equipment that they need to be self-sufficient until help arrives including first aid and communication equipment.
