YNZ Submits on Flavell Bill

Yachting New Zealand took up the opportunity to make a submission on the Gambling (Gambling Harm Reduction) Amendment Bill to the Commerce Committee.

Changing the funding mechanism will unleash an upheaval in sport funding that will undermine long-term planning and reduce the ability to implement nationally consistent community and club support. Within Yachting New Zealand we stand to lose up to eight employees who provide valuable club, community, school and disabled sailing support

Yachting New Zealand believes that the proposed funding mechanism will result in higher participation costs and reduced access to participation in amateur community Yachting and boating, damaging community health and wellbeing.

Yachting New Zealand would support a more thorough review of ways to reduce harm from class 4 gambling and any resulting measures should be considered by government.

Yachting New Zealand has considered the provisions of the Gambling (Gambling Harm Reduction) Amendment Bill (the Bill) on a clause by clause basis, and has determined that the clauses most problematic to community, regional, national and international sport and Yachting in New Zealand are clauses 10, 9 and 6.

Taken in effect, these clauses enact a change to the mechanism for the funding of Yachting that could bring the sport in New Zealand to a near standstill and will have a profoundly negative impact on the community.
