This draft plan offers us all a wonderful opportunity to support the increase of Takapuna Beachfront public reserve and the proposed National Ocean Water Sports Centre (NOWSC) which will cater primarily to high performance ocean water sports athletes, but is also intended to accommodate a range of community uses while enhancing public amenities.
The Takapuna Beach Reserve Management Plan (RMP) and NOWSC has received strong support from local and central government, and key Yachting New Zealand partners including the Harbour Access Trust, Auckland Council, High Performance Sport New Zealand, the Lion Foundation and the New Zealand Community Trust.
This new space has the potential to be a world class training and competition venue for yachting, triathlon, ocean swimming, kayaking, Waka-ama, and many other marine based sports while identifying Takapuna as a true International destination attracting visitors, competitors and supporters alike. The NOWSC will be an Iconic landmark located on the proposed spatial zones outlined in the draft RMP at the northern end of the reserve in order to create a primary marine hub and to ensure that the unrestricted activity for informal recreation is preserved in the area adjacent to the Strand. The specific location of this can be seen on Maps 31 & 32 of the draft RMP
The submission period closes on 11 September 2012, and will be followed by reserves act hearings, to which submitters are able to speak to their submissions. Submission forms may be downloaded from the Auckland Council Website found below, and we request that all supporters of this wonderful project ask to speak at the hearings.
This project can only proceed once submissions have been heard and the draft plan accepted by Council.
