Volunteer boat drivers needed for America's Cup

Issue date

The 2021 America's Cup promises to be spectacular and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron are looking for boat drivers and crew for the event.

There will be a call out in late 2019 or early 2020 for land-based volunteers but, because of the complexity and scale of the boat driver requirements, they are seeking applications now for the drivers and crew for the race management, course marshall and media boats. These consist of at least 20 high-powered Rayglass Protectors 9m to 12.5m in length.

The timeline for the applications to process is later this year but Squadron general manager Hayden Porter was encouraging people to put their names and qualifications through early.

There will be an interview process, police vetting and practical skills evaluation as part of this. Extensive training will be provided to successful applicants to ensure everyone is compliant.

Applications can be found here.

"The event promises to be an amazing one and will have a number of additional elements that we are working through at present that will require your generous support to ensure we can deliver this world class-event and the RNZYS 150th year celebrations," Porter said.
