Auckland to Tauranga race

Starting in dirty wind drill

Issue date

This drill splits the fleet in 2, with half starting on the “front row” and half in the “second row”.

The drill highlights the importance of getting a good start on the line rather than behind the fleet, effectively on a different lower start line.

Boats starting between marks 3 and 4 have to protect their lead, while boats starting on the start line between 1 and 2 must catch up and look for options as they are behind from the gun.

Start the race at the same time for both start lines.
