Being a race coach is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have as a mentor and Yachting New Zealand have now made it easier for more people to get involved.
We've taken on board feedback from coaches, sailors and parents and have developed it into a programme with two components - an online and on-water portion.
“I am really thrilled with how this has turned out," Yachting New Zealand coach development manager Peter Soosalu said. "The course now has a new format and is available now on the Yachting New Zealand website. It really benefits both coaches in the regions and city centres alike.”
Coaches firstly register for the online portion of the course and complete content through Embark, Yachting New Zealand’s online learning platform.
This is followed by the on-water portion of the course, which can be done in three different ways:
- Connecting with three other prospective race coaches at the same stage and arranging for a local coach developer to give feedback on a locally-run coaching session
- Attending a regatta in the 2021/2022 season also attended by Peter Soosalu
- Coaching a race coach level session, and submitting video as feedback
Mark Howard, who coached Sam Meech over the past two Olympic cycles, recently reviewed the course.
“The new race coach course is great for a coach looking to take their first steps into a racing environment," he said.
"Being busy meant I was not sure if I would have the time to look through it, so with content being flexible I was able to chip away at it on my own schedule. That will be really helpful for those who are already coaching and looking to upskill.”
The course costs $175 and you find more information about it, and register your interest, here.
