Schools team racing nationals put on hold

Issue date

The Secondary Schools Team Racing National Championships has been impacted by Covid-19 for the second time in three years, with the postponement of this year's event.

The 2022 nationals were due to be hosted by the Sandspit Yacht Club in Algies Bay on April 25-30 but organisers have made the difficult decision to postpone this due to the Omicron outbreak.

"After much discussion and looking at the regatta as many different ways as we can, there was no feasible way that we could run the regatta responsibly in the current environment, given the inherent nature of shared equipment and shared spaces at the regatta in Algies Bay," New Zealand Team Sailing Association development officer Jamie Catchpole said.

"We are hopeful of a reschedule date in the spring, working around the other sailing commitments that many others have at that time of year. We are encouraging as many schools as possible to continue training and competing at the regionals that are scheduled for later this month."

The team racing nationals is one of the most popular on the secondary schools sailing calendar, and typically attracts about 30 teams from around the country. Rangitoto College have won the last two events in 2019 and 2021, with the 2020 nationals cancelled due to the lockdown.
