Onerahi to Noumea Ocean Race – 18 April 1964

Issue date

It will be 50 years ago next April that the Onerahi to Noumea Ocean Race first took place. That race, and the ones that followed in later years, will be celebrated by the Onerahi Yacht Club next year.

This note is to give a ‘Heads Up’, to let folk be aware of our plans, to spread the word and to get the nostalgia and the memory banks fired up.

Mike Valiant, Bruce Yovich and I have been tasked with making things happen and we will be looking for a lot of help from those who were more part of the events.

We will add a few more to our little group to help pull it all together, Anne Dawson is one, but we will want a couple more perhaps to help gather and unearth facts, figures, photos and figments of memory.

We are looking at Saturday, April 26th (to avoid Easter) for our event and at this point imagine an afternoon gathering, open invitation.

While there will be some emphasis on the original race, we would hope that everyone who was involved in any of the races will want to come along and reminisce.

So, no details yet, but…….

-         Spread the word.

-         Think about people who would want to know of the occasion.

-         Do you have any memorabilia?
