NZL Sailing Team in Abu Dhabi for ISAF Sailing World Cup Final

Issue date

A handful of the NZL Sailing Team are in Abu Dhabi for the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Final where racing is set to start on Thursday 27 November.

New Zealand will be represented in the Men’s single-handed events by Andy Maloney and Sam Meech in the Laser, and Josh Junior in the Finn.  There are also two kiwi skiff crews in the United Arab Emirates including Alexandra Maloney and Molly Meech sailing in the Women’s 49erFX and Marcus Hansen and Josh Porebski in the Men’s 49er.

Both skiff crews have travelled to Abu Dhabi from Rio, Brazil after competing in the 2014 49er and 49erFX South American Championships earlier this month, where Maloney and Meech collected a silver medal.

Racing in Abu Dhabi runs over four days starting on November 27 and wrapping up on November 30. The Abu Dhabi event is new to the ISAF Sailing World Cup and 2014 is the forerunner of an ‘invitation only’ event format which allows for only 20 boats in each event.

About the NZL Sailing Team

The NZL Sailing Team includes New Zealand’s top Olympic campaigners who have made the top 20% in their most recent (respective) class World Championships or pinnacle event and have shown consistency of performance over the year including other significant Championships.

Yachting New Zealand’s High Performance Programme is focussed on winning medals at the Olympics in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

NZL Sailing Team sailors all started out at grass roots yacht clubs around the country and with commitment, dedication and drive have risen to be world class athletes; they work hard in the gym, train long hours on the water and are supported by great coaches.
