    On Saturday the 26th April 2014 at 2pm, at the Onerahi Yacht Club Clubrooms, Beach Rd, Onerahi, we will be celebrating the Whangarei to Noumea Yacht Race, from the inaugural event on the 18th April 1964 through the races of 1967, 1971, 1975, 1978, 1980, 1982 and 1984.

    2014 Hansa Class Nationals were hosted by the Waitara Boating Club and completed nine races over the three days of the regatta. Racing was very close in the Liberty and 303 single classes, conditions on day one saw a fresh southeaster testing the sailors and equipment. In the Liberty class Helena Horswell and Wayne South of (RAYC) topped the leader board, and in the 303 class local sailor Bob Knox (WBC) and Ben Geddies (TYPBC) took the lead.

    The European season is about to get underway for the NZL Sailing Team with the start of racing at ISAF Sailing World Cup Palma scheduled for Monday next week. A team of 14 crews (including 21 sailors) will represent New Zealand in eight events at the up-coming ISAF Sailing World Cup Regatta which runs over six days on the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca.

    For decades, Macleans College were a dominant force in College sailing, but in more recent years the school failed to field a team at all. Yesterday the Maclenas College team, who were 19th at last year’s nationals, won the gold fleet of the Auckland Teams Racing Regional Qualifier and the prestigious Auckland Cup.

    What a regatta it has been for the Lion Foundation Youth Training Programme team onboard the XP-44 ‘Lawless’. The team sailed extremely well and at the end of the 3 day Jack Tar Auckland Regatta achieved 1st on IRC, 1st on PHRF, 1st on Regatta Handicap and 3rd on Line in Division B.

    The 2014 420 National Championship concluded on 16th March Evans Bay, Wellington with Olivia Mackay and Abby Goodwin (Napier Sailing Club) returning to re win their 2013 National title, Cameron Moss and Taylor Balogh (Naval Point Club Lyttleton) 2nd and Sam Barnett and Zac Merton (Tauranga Yacht & Powerboat Club) 3rd also taking out the selection for the 2014 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team.

    Summer tournament week is the week of Regional Teams Race Sailing ranking regattas for College sailing ahead of the April Holiday’s and Nationals.     The 3.7 National Champion for 2014 is Derek Snow (Wakatere BC) in a very close contest won on countback. Second-placed Phil Ash (Manly SC) was on the same points. Both were Veterans. Mark O'Brien (Hamilton YC) in 3rd place was very close.

Since the 2012 Olympics, we got more serious about one concept, Theatre Style Racing, and formally approved it as a class at our Worlds in 2013. We are reaching out for support from the broader sailing community with our aim being to use this format for the Rio Olympics.
