    The course was tight with rocks, current and gusts coming off the city turning the racing into a game of snakes and ladders at times. Two wild card teams joined the regatta and both will be competing in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup. The teams were the Swiss and the local team from Portugal. It was exciting to line up against two of the teams we will be racing in September!

    Dave was a coach for Tom Ashley in the build up to Tom becoming Olympic champion in 2008. Dave then coached Tom and the womens RSX squad leading up to the 2012 Olympics and recently he has been coaching the RSX youth team, 49er FX and 49er sailors. Q) How did you get into coaching? A) I started at 16 with Optimists at my local club and really enjoyed it. I then progressed into coaching the Techno class, attending the Worlds as a coach on a PM scholarship. When I finished competing, Tom asked me to coach him in the RSX windsurfer.

    Tactics in sailing are a difficult enough subject, but even harder to explain as a coach to your sailors in training. Especially training in a small group, trying to replicate the decision making of sailing a fleet. Mark Rushall’s Tactics book is an excellent read with plenty of pictures and diagrams to help visualize real life situations.

    It was a slow start to the 2013 Open and Junior European Championship in Warnemünde, Germany as the sailors waited patiently onshore all day as the wind failed to stabilize at anything more than a paltry 4 knots. It was finally abandoned for the day at 17.00.
  • Earthquake Building Repairs to the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club

    Post-earthquake repairs are underway at the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club and are expected to be completed around three months from now. “The Waimakariri Sailing and Powerboat Club will be the first Christchurch yacht club to start their earthquake repairs,” explains Regional Support Officer Kate Spackman. “With high tides now flooding the boat sheds underneath the club house the repairs will see the building lifted as well as repaired.”
  • Nacra 17 Worlds: Day racing today at the Hague

    All racing was cancelled today in the Nacra 17 Worlds in Scheveningen, The Hague. This morning at 10 AM the AP flag (postponement) was hoisted for both fleets, yellow and blue. In the afternoon a light sea breeze seemed to be coming in and the yellow fleet left the beach. Once in the starting area the wind was gone again and the multihulls couldn't even sail against the current. At 4 PM the committee decided to send the boats back to the beach, but still hoped for wind. At 6.30 PM the verdict came: all races cancelled for the day.
