Go Coastal Racing on Sir Peter Blake’s Lion New Zealand

Issue date

Look no further for a vessel to race in the Coastal Classic this year, the New Zealand Sailing Trust has crew places available for people keen to experience Maxi yacht sailing.

Sir Peter Blake’s iconic Round the World yacht, Lion New Zealand, will be racing from Auckland to Russell on the 25th October 2013.  This is an opportunity of a lifetime to experience team racing on a maxi yacht.  Participants do not need prior experience but should expect to be completely hands on and great team members working hard to achieve the best possible time.

The Coastal Classic Yacht Race, from Devonport Wharf to Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands, is New Zealand’s premier fleet yacht race and has been held annually during Labour Weekend since its inception in 1982.  The race starts on Friday the 25th October at 10am and on Lion New Zealand will take between 12-24 hours to complete depending on the conditions.  On board there will be an experienced racing crew who will host the journey and provide all safety briefings and sailing expertise.

The NZ Sailing Trust was inspired by the adventures of Sir Peter Blake, and his racing teams. The Trust exists to ensure that key yachts are preserved and sailing adventures are run on board to help inspire the next generation. The Trust is preserving the past, in order to help shape the future.

The NZ Sailing Trust collaborates with schools and youth organisations to help young New Zealanders experience the legacy of Sir Peter Blake and his teams through sailing on their iconic yachts.
