Kiwi Team arrive in Poland for 2014 Radial Youth Worlds

Issue date

A contingent of New Zealand youth Laser radial sailors have just arrived in Dziwnow, Poland for the 2014 Laser Radial Youth Worlds starting 28th July.

Trent Rippey and Ali Nightingale flew in from Tavira, Portugal having recently finished the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships. James Jennings, Cullen Leroy and Olivia Christie arrived in from New Zealand.

After getting the charter boats, the team quickly assembled the boats to get out for a training session.

The first days training treated the sailors to 25 degrees air temperatures, 14 knots of wind and 2metre waves. The sail out of the marina, down the river to the ocean keeps the sailors on their toes as the wind comes from all 360 degrees even though the flags on shore show a constant easterly.

The water is refreshing and the large breaking waves will make for a challenging race track. Some rabbit runs and exhilarating downwind runs gave the sailors a taste of what to expect at the regatta. Sailing on the exact race area is not possible while the Men's Open Radial Worlds is currently racing.

Coach Charles Baillie Strong is still waiting for his bags and any wet weather gear to arrive.

Racing can be followed on the regatta website.
