Good turn-out for Wairoa River Regatta

Issue date

Once again a good number of boats turned out for Wairoa Yacht Club’s Wairoa River Regatta.

The regatta included the East Coast Championships for Lasers, P Class and the Optimist green fleet.

Held over two days, the opening day turned on lovely breeze but plenty of current to test sailors on their first day of competition. Sunday followed with light winds, enjoyed by the learn-to-sail Opti fleet, but again tested the seasoned sailors.

Sailors from Wairoa, Napier and Gisborne made up the bulk of the fleet, and it was good to see the amount of juniors attending the regatta.

“The annual River Race, as part of the regatta, had sailors sailing up river to the bridge next to the township which looked spectacular,” describes Wayne Holdt, REgioanl Support Officer for the Central Region. “As usual the hospitality was great with sailors and their families able to camp at the club and socialise.”

The next event for Wairoa Yacht Club is the East Coast Juniorsail on 21-23 January 2015 - a live in sailing camp for junior sailors in whatever boats they turn up in and is aimed at learning, while having a heap of fun.
