East Coast Juniorsail a little different

Issue date

East Coast Juniorsail was held at the Wairoa Yacht Club in lovely sailing conditions.

Yachting New Zealand Regional Support Officer Wayne Holdt reports; “A destination sail that took us 5km up the river was great with locals taking photos as they hadn’t seen yachts up the river that far before. And we took a sail down to the shingle bank near the river mouth to find dinosaur bones (well sheep and goats) but the kids couldn’t tell.”

This East Coast camp is a little different than other Optisails held in the central region, as sailors can turn up in any boat they wish. This year there was a mixture of lasers, P Class and Optis, with the older kids helping out the younger sailors – great to see!

Wayne continues, “Thanks to Jill and her team of helpers and coaches from Wairoa, Ohope and Gisborne.”

“These camps have become a real part of the Sailing calendars in the region over the last few years, and goes to show kids still enjoy mucking around in boats.”
