From the Chief Executive: David’s Desk December 2013

YNZ's Chief Executive David Abercrombie gives us an update on recent events at Yachting New Zealand, bringing 2013 to a close and looking forward to 2014. 

Dear members, 

Membership Model – Recently we emailed all Clubs about the membership project we are undertaking in response to positive support for the initiative at the 2013 Yachting New Zealand AGM. Kelly Fong is now in the office and on the telephone to a selection of Clubs to gather information around current membership categories and break-downs. If you hear, or have already heard, from Kelly I greatly appreciate you helping out with her requests. The ultimate goal is to make the right decision around how to most fairly attribute our affiliation levy.

The 2013 Volvo Yachting Excellence Awards was a huge success and I want to congratulate all those who were recognised for both achievements and for service to our sport. This year was truly exceptional in terms of international results making, while the collective tally of hours committed to yachting by those to receive Service Awards is remarkable. We welcome seven new Yachting New Zealand Life members and we give a nod to the 2013 President’s Award winner – the Bay of Islands Sailing Week who year upon year grow the success of their great regatta. I’d like to say thanks to the organisations that helped make the night a huge success including Volvo Cars New Zealand, Partridge Jewellers, Zhik, B&G, House of Travel and Emirates.

We have been working on a number of projects to help bring more value to members.

In late November, Yachting New Zealand and n3 (previously called GSB) partnered up to help reduce club operating costs by providing each currently affiliated club with one or more Trade Card. The n3 (GSB) Trade Card can be used at 24 participating suppliers for business purchases with in store discounts, and there is no cost to clubs for this. Clubs should now be hearing from n3 to learn more about their complete range of services and tools to help save money and time at your club.

More recently, we started on a project to address what is for many clubs, the single biggest outgoing: property insurance. We’ve sent a survey to all club commodores and secretaries, asking for information on your club insurance coverage and needs. The larger the property  portfolio we can present, the greater the savings will be for everybody and there is no harm in looking at options. Thanks very much for your help getting this done before Christmas.

Christmas is nearly upon us and this is the final issue of Briefings newsletter until the New Year. It is at this time that I wish to say thank you to the Yachting New Zealand team including Board Directors and staff who have all worked extremely hard throughout 2013.
