    Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have once again secured 49er gold before starting the medal race, this time at 2016 Sailing World Cup Hyeres in France.  Another six New Zealand crews will sail in tomorrow’s medal races on the final day of the regatta.

    Murrays Bay Sailing Club (MBSC) hosted the Windsurfing Nationals over ANZAC weekend. 34 Sailors raced in the RS:X, Techno,  Kona and Raceboard classes. It is the first time in recent history that centreboard windsurfers had sailed in one regatta.

    At the close of day two 2016 Sailing World Cup Hyeres the NZL Sailing Team are in the top two in three events, with a total of nine kiwi crews placed within the top ten.

    While day one produced top end conditions, with capsizes, rig and boat damage across the fleets, today things turned around and the sailors faced the challenge of a no wind delay, followed by a shifty building breeze.

    The NZL Sailing Team has made a strong start at 2016 Sailing World Cup Hyeres Regatta holding the early lead in three of the ten Olympic class events being contested in France including the Finn, 49er and women’s 470. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, and Josh Junior all out-performed their rivals today and sit atop their respective leader boards after day one of the five day regatta.

  • 2016 Secondary Schools Team Sailing National Championships

    The New Zealand Team Sailing Association and Sandspit Yacht Club are preparing for this year’s Secondary Schools Team Sailing Nationals, led by event organiser Ross Sutherland. The event will be held at Algies Bay, Warkworth, with sailing starting on 24th April and continuing through to Friday 29th, with 31 teams (225 sailors) representing schools from the Cook Islands down to Timaru.
  • Norman crowned the 2016 Line 7 New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Champion

    Samantha Norman, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, has taken the title of New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Champion for 2016. In a nail biting final match with Zoe Bennett from the RPNYC, it was a battle of North vs South and Experience vs Youth. Samantha and her team of Jenna Hansen, Hanna Hielkema and Kate Ellingham took the title with 3 wins and 1 loss, describing the regatta as “hard work but lots of fun!”.
  • History made at the 2016 Farr National Championships

    Hamish Hall-Smith has won the Farr 3.7 National Championship and made a bit of history at the same time being the first under-21 sailor to win the Open Title. Only 2 1/2 years after hopping out of a Starling, and after campaigning a 49er last season, Hamish (17) focussed on building a new wing rig in an effort to harness more power and this proved a step forwards for his boat set up.
