2018 PIC Coastal Classic

2018 PIC Coastal Classic
Friday 19th October

Auckland to Russell

Labour weekend will see the 36th edition of the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club’s Great Race North and the organising committee have ambitious plans for the year ahead.

“We are working hard to encourage more boats, first timers and a return of the smaller boats for an adventure packed weekend from Auckland to Russell in the Bay of Islands” says commodore Greer Houston”.

Starting from 9:30am on Friday 19th October, organisers are hoping that up to 200 boats will participate in this legendary showcase of everything that is good about sailboat racing in New Zealand.

“Last year we introduced a cruising rally division, and the feedback reassured us that this was a loved addition to the race so we will expand on this among other initiatives to get more boaties involved” he continues.

The rally division opens the event up to a whole new demographic of sailor with no need to take the squabs off or get a PHRF handicap certificate, and if this is only sailing event you do, you may not need specific race insurance. Starting one hour earlier than the racing yachts, the 36 Degrees Brokers Cruising Rally is a fun group cruise from Auckland to The Bay which is ideal for production and cruising boats, families or those who aren’t hungry to be the first to the finish line (although we have heard that there was a wee bit of friendly competition out there last year).

New and long-time participants are encouraged to attend the two race clinics (Sept 3rd & Oct 15th), and also sign up for the PIC Coastal Classic Crew Finder facebook group – if they don’t yet have a team to sail with.

The legendary PIC Coastal Classic’s outlook is good, with growth through new initiatives such as the rally and also notable, a generous move made by PIC Insurance Brokers who committed to three more years support.

“We have a personal stake in seeing our local communities thrive, and especially the sailing community which we are close to” says Managing Director Mike Garner.

“We know that the PIC Coastal Classic is one of the most important events for the NZ sailing community, and we are certain that our investment can help the event thrive too.”
