The NCEA sailing unit standards have been approved by NZQA. Credits can be used to meet the requirements of qualifications on the National Qualifications framework including NCEA.
NCEA sailing offers teenagers and other adults the opportunity to learn to sail. The course would normally be delivered by a Learn to Sail Coach either through a yacht club or a sailing school with which the student’s school has an arrangement for delivery of the course.
There are two streams available, dinghy and keelboat. In both streams there are units on safety, basic principles, and on the water sailing. The *Basic Principles unit is common to both dinghy and keelboat streams.
A student who completes all 3 units in either stream is also entitled to be awarded the Yachting New Zealand certification, provided they have been taught by a qualified Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail (dinghy or keelboat) coach. These qualifications are recognised internationally for those who wish to charter a boat or obtain employment in the marine field.
Change to processing NZQA Level 2 Sailing Credits (21929, 21930, 21931, 21932 and 21933)

As of now, credits can no longer be submitted via Yachting New Zealand. Skills Active is no longer processing credits on a casual credit reporting basis for schools and tertiary providers.
Clubs and YNZ Maritime Members will still be able to offer training and assessment to schools and tertiary providers; however schools and tertiary providers will report the credits directly to NZQA themselves.
In order to allow this, each school or tertiary provider you work with will need to gain Consent to Assess from NZQA for the units you offer.
Yachting New Zealand and Skills Active can provide support to clubs, schools and tertiary providers through this process.

Skills Active is familiar with Yachting New Zealand’s Coaching qualifications and has reviewed and moderated the training material we provide clubs and maritime organisations in order to meet their standards.
We recognise that this is an additional administrative hurdle, however, it is a one off process for each school and once it is in place for a school or tertiary provider, the assessment and reporting process will be more streamlined and the reporting costs to the students will be far cheaper. We hope these benefits will in turn make offering sailing as a subject at school more attractive and allow clubs to attract more school to use them for training.
