The Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club (TYPBC) is looking to appoint two instructors to take over the Program Coordinator / Chief Instructor role for its sailing school in the 2014-15 season.

Based in Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand, TYPBC is amongst a very small number of NZ sailing clubs that covers everything from Learn to Sail to national and international dinghy racing, trailer yachts, multihulls and keelboats. TYPBC is home to a number of World Champions competing on the world stage from the Olympics to the America’s Cup.

The sailing school runs a varied dinghy sailing program of children’s learn to sail programs (Yachting New Zealand Levels 1-3), race coaching for club classes (Optimist, P Class and Starling), adult learn to sail courses, college teams racing development squads, and learn to windsurf courses.

This is an exciting opportunity for self-motivated and well organised people who are keen to rise to the challenge of managing their own sailing school.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delivering Yachting New Zealand’s Learn to Sail scheme to students as well as race coaching for club members looking to attend regional and national events.
  • Plan training courses and course content for schools, club members and school holiday programs.
  • Develop, review and implement sailing school procedures, risk management, safety plans and documentation.
  • Maintain a record of Sailing School revenues and expenses.
  • Liaising with customers, teachers & parents regarding course information, registration, invoicing and any additional queries.
  • Promote and market the club’s courses and events.

Requirements:

  • Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail coach qualification, or equivalent (RYA Instructor, Yachting Australia Instructor etc.)
  • Candidates preferred with racing experience
  • Powerboat Drivers qualification and First Aid
  • Flexible with working hours
  • Teams racing experience would be helpful but not necessary

Instructors can expect between 30-40 hours of work a week with on-site shared accommodation available. Most sessions are run after school and on weekends with day long programs through the school holidays. There is also the opportunity for travel, supporting sailors competing in national regattas.
