Regional Roundup - recognising club volunteers

Issue date

The four Yachting New Zealand regional development managers take a look at what has been happening in their areas and also urge you to consider nominating someone at your club for this year's Aon Yachting Excellence Awards.

There's usually at least one at every club, that individual who goes above and beyond to make sure the club runs smoothly and members enjoy a good experience.

Now is the time to recognise these people by nominating them for a service award at this year's Aon Yachting Excellence Awards.

The Service Award category was first introduced in 1987, and many worthy recipients have been recipients over the years - as you can see here.

Nominations close on September 1 but we would urge you to submit yours now instead of waiting until the last minute. Find the nomination form here.

Alongside our performance categories the other categories, in particular, we would like clubs to nominate members for include: Young Leadership Award, Sportsmanship Award, Sustainability Award and Cruising Award. See the full list here

You can also join us at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on November 18 for this year's Aon Yachting Excellence Awards gala dinner.

New Plymouth Yacht Club

New Plymouth Yacht Club

The Woman on Water programme run by the New Plymouth Yacht Club finally got some sailing in recently after a run of bad weather kept them land-locked.

Eight women took to the water in the two club Elliott 5.9s for a great afternoon of sailing.

Programme organiser Sacha MacGregor is doing a great job coordinating sailing activities for the group of 30, and this will continue through the winter on the Elliott 5.9s before switching to the club's 420s when the weather warms up a bit.

Murrays Bay Sailing Club

SailGP

The Murrays Bay Sailing Club have organised a behind-the-scenes tour of SailGP's technology and manufacturing facility based in Warkworth on August 13 to help raise funds for junior sailing at the club.

A couple of MBSC life members, Garry Hassall and Peter Dawson, have offered to host a visit to the Warkworth facility when a brand new F50 will be on show prior to it being disassembled, packed and shipped overseas later in the month. Pinta, a brand new TP52 will be there also.

Numbers are limited and it's expected interest will be high, and not just from MBSC members.

The evening kicks off at 5.30pm and includes a 60-90 minute tour followed by a snack and cash bar in the factory lunchroom.

Tickets cost $50 per person and must be ordered and paid before prior to the event.

If you wish to attend, please deposit $50 in the MBSC bank account (12 3042 0272614 04) and email julian.beavis@xtra.co.nz with your name.

Club details

Clubs are asked to update their local regional development manager and Yachting New Zealand (reception@yachtingnz.org.nz) with the various contact details of committee members following their AGM.

This is important to direct any enquiries to the right individual but also ensure Yachting New Zealand correspondence is emailed to current flag holders.

Southern ILCA (Laser) Series

ILCA

The 2022-2023 Southern ILCA (Laser) Series is now confirmed and shaping up to be another cracker with five events on the programme.

The series has been a great success over the last few years, largely due to the great passion of the sailors to promote and build the series.

2022/23 programme

Nov 26-27: Lake Dunstan ILCA regatta. Fresh water sailing and many short, sprint-type races.
Dec 10-12:
ILCA South Island Championships, Vauxhall Yacht Club, Dunedin. Sailing on the Otago Harbor in a traditional ILCA regatta.
Earl Jan 20223: Wanaka New Year’s Regatta (dates TBC).
Bluff Oyster Regatta, Bluff Yacht Club. This event will incorporate the Southland Yachting Association Championships. Bluff always hosts a great regatta, with the seafood and hospitality being an integral part of the regatta.

The Navy Cup

The Navy Cup race was held on July 10, bringing together a number of navy personnel. A good time was held by all, especially Tortimony who lofted the Tot for winning.

Started in 1934, the Wellington Division RNVR Inter company Whaler Sailing cup was contested every year by navy personnel on Wellington harbour.

From the early 1930s to the late 1990s, the RNZNR would go sailing every Friday night on Wellington harbour, a practice discontinued when the Whalers were donated to the sea scouts.

The RPNYC have acted as hosts to the navy in competition for this cup since 2017, and are working together to keep this part of Wellington sailing history alive.

Auckland Junior Winter Sprints – KYC

Kohimarama Yacht Club

More than 65 sailors, from Optis to Fevas, took part on a gorgeous winter's day for the second event of the Auckland Junior Winter Sprints series at the Kohimarama Yacht Club recently.

Always competitive, this series is a great way to get in a bit of racing in over the quieter winter months and, of course, to catch up with sailing friends.

While the Starlings managed to get four races in, the other classes raced only three in the dying breeze. Check out the results here

The next event in the series is at at Murrays Bay Sailing Club on July 30.

Gulf Harbour Yacht Club

Gulf Harbour Yacht Club

Recent winter series racing at the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club required the competitors to wait patiently for the wind to kick in.

Race management expertly delivered a course that allowed for the boats to get a race underway and, at the same time, allow for the boats from the Weiti Boating Club to catch the tide for their return trip up the river.

The drifting conditions did see a few tussles at the top mark but the wind soon kicked in allowing the boats at the back of the fleet to make up positions in the final results.

Manly Sailing Club

Mattias Coutts

A huge congratulations to Mattias Coutts for placing third in the Moth at Foiling Week in Lake Garda recently.

It was an impressive fleet, with Olympic and world champions and America's Cup sailors littered throughout, and Coutts sailed consistently well to finish on the podium.

Live Ocean Racing also placed second in the ETF26 at the same event and Elise Beavis was second female in the Waszp.
