Push to grow open teams racing nationals

Issue date

Organisers are hoping to build on the success of last year's New Zealand open teams racing national championships, which returned to the racing calendar after a 10-year absence.

Ten teams from as far afield as Christchurch and Nelson gathered at the Kerikeri Cruising Club last year and it's hoped another strong fleet will compete at this year's event at Kerikeri on June 1-3.

Teams racing is popular at high school level and efforts are being made to transfer that into the open fleet.

A team consists of six sailors and three 420 boats racing against another team with the team scoring the lowest number of points based on their finishing position winning. It is very tactical even though races last about seven minutes.

Last year the Kiwi racing Team of Reuben Corbett, Ethan Manning-Harris, Frankie Dair, Maeve White, Shae Donahoe and Josh Berry took out the regatta.

Entries this year will accepted from teams of six sailors of any age and gender. The two crew members for each boat must weight a minimum of 130kg combined body weight, although crews between 110kg and 130kg can make up their weight to 130kg in approved sand-filled bottles fixed in the boat near the mast step.

Entries close on April 30, 2019, and no late entries will be accepted. For more information, contact Reuben Corbett on 021 0299 4752.
