NZL Sailing Regatta

NZL Sailing Regatta changed to two days

Issue date

Next month's Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta has been condensed into a two-day event to make it easier for youth to participate.

This year's event at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club on March 28-29 was always going to have an accent on youth, with so many of this country's top sailors competing overseas, and a decision was made to shave a day off the length of the regatta to appeal to a wider group of potential competitors.

"We have decided to condense it into two days to allow many athletes to attend classes on the Friday and still participate in the weekend's racing," Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta organiser Sam Mackay said. "The regatta will still be hugely beneficial for those who take part.

"We'll be looking to return to normal in 2021 with a full-strength, three-day regatta."

Coaching sessions and practice racing will be run on the Friday for anyone interested, including anyone from out of town who has already booked flights and accommodation.

The entry price now also reflects a reduced competition and anyone who had already entered will be reimbursed the equivalent of a third day of racing.

The regatta is open to all boats of the Laser Standard, Laser Radial, 49er, 49Fx, Nacra 15, 420, 29er, windfoilers and kite classes.

The notice of race has been updated an entries are open until March 19 (a late fee might apply for entries received after this date).

Anyone interested in taking part in Friday's coaching session should contact Sam Mackay.
