ISAF Youth: Refreshed and ready for final races

Issue date

After a day of rest and recovery, the 2012 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships have resumed racing in Ireland at Dublin Bay. The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team had a day of mixed results, but still the overall standings are improving.

Auckland based Laser Radial sailor Andrew McKenzie started the day well, winning his first race of this regatta.

“I came out of the lay day with the right mindset and managed to play the shifts well” Andrew said, “but the conditions are still so taxing.”

Although the day started off sunny with potential to be completely dry, a huge cloudburst in the afternoon soaked the sailors, and dragged the wind around all directions.

“Again it was really tricky and shifty for us cats that can’t tack often” said Gemma Jones who is sailing in the SL16 catamaran. “For us, the first race went well and our second was just unlucky.”

Gemma and sailing partner Tomer Simhony had another two top ten finishes today, a fifth and ninth, which leaves them sixth overall.

In the 420’s, Ellie and Erica had another two consistent races so they remain top kiwis in fifth overall, while Christchurch based Jayvee Buchanan, sailing with Matthew Morrison in the Boys’ 420 had a much better day, jumping five places up the overall leader board.
