Microplastics

Help needed for Hauraki Gulf study

Issue date

Microplastics are becoming an increasingly significant problem for our oceans and waterways and a study to monitor microplastics in the sea surface of the Hauraki Gulf is in need of a vessel to enable the research to take place.

The intended study is due to happen in April 2021 and will be a collaborative project between charitable trusts, Crown research institutes and tertiary providers supported by the UN Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The expedition will also facilitate the platform for The Marine Biosecurity Toolbox (www.biosecurity-toolbox.org.nz) which is a collaborative research programme whose mission is the development of science-based tools and technologies that empower governments, tangata whenua, industry and the public to effectively mitigate biosecurity risks.

They need a vessel with 6-8 berths, has a low carbon footprint, sufficient deck space and comes with a skipper.

Anyone who thinks they can help or knows someone who could, should contact Algalita South Pacific chair and programmes director Raquelle de Vine on raquelle@algalita.org or 027 431 1038. See here for more information on the work Algalita South Pacific do.
