2026 ILCA 7 World Championships, Day 1: Race win lifts New Zealand's Tom Saunders into top 20 in Ireland
A race win saw Tom Saunders finish day one of the ILCA 7 World Championships just inside the top 20, with the New Zealander producing a strong late-day performance in a challenging opening three-race series in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland.
Saunders, a former world champion, opened with a 17th before improving to 12th in the second race, then saved his best for last, winning the final race of the day to finish 19th overall in the 141-boat fleet.
The result puts Saunders firmly in touch with the leading pack after the opening day, with the top 20 separated by only a handful of points.
George Gautrey was the next best of the Kiwi contingent in 31st overall, highlighted by a seventh-place finish in the second race.
Caleb Armit sits 78th overall, with George Pilkington 80th and Zach Stibbe 103rd after the opening three races.
Conditions tested the fleet throughout the day, with the breeze building from 6–7 knots for the opening races to 10–11 knots later in the afternoon, accompanied by building waves and light rain.
Irish sailor Finn Lynch leads the championship after posting a 1-2-4 scorecard, tied on three points with Italy's Attilio Borio. Germany's Ole Schweckendiek and Hong Kong's Nicholas Halliday are also closely positioned at the top of the standings.
Saunders' race win puts him among a group of sailors who claimed victories on day one, including reigning Olympic champion Matt Wearn of Australia, who sits ninth overall.
Racing continues tomorrow with two further qualifying races scheduled, with the first warning signal at 12pm local time.
