2026 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships, Day 1: Mattias Coutts and Oscar Gunn lead charge as New Zealand crews well placed after day one in Germany

New Zealand's skiff sailors have made an encouraging start to the European Championships in Germany, with several crews well placed after the opening day of racing.

Leading the Kiwi contingent are 49er pair Mattias Coutts and Oscar Gunn, who sit 10th overall after finishing fourth and seventh in their opening two races in demanding conditions off Eckernförde.

The result continues the momentum for the duo, who arrived at the regatta fresh from a fourth-place finish at Kiel Week a fortnight ago.

Fellow 49er crews also opened solidly, with newly crowned world champions Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush sitting 22nd overall after posting a 16th and a third.

The 21-year-olds return to the event as defending European champions, having claimed the continental title in Greece last year. Since then, they have added an even bigger prize to their résumé, producing a remarkable comeback to win the world championship in France in May after recovering from an early penalty in the medal race.

Francesco Kayrouz and Hamish McLaren are 35th overall after rebounding from a difficult opener with a top-10 finish in race two, while Auckland brothers Sean and Rowan Kensington are three places further back in 38th.

Competing in their first European campaign together in the 49er, the Kensingtons are using the regatta to build experience ahead of the Junior World Championships later this month.

"The conditions were top-end and a bit squally and built throughout the day," 19-year-old Sean Kensington said.

"We were just aiming to keep it simple and get around the race track clean. We had a few swims but were mainly happy with our racing today."

Older brother Rowan said the focus remained firmly on learning.

"It's our first trip in the 49er, so this week is all about learning and our processes," the 21-year-old said.

"We go to the Junior World Championships in a couple of weeks, and that's when we'll try to put down a good result."

The opening day tested sailors across all three Olympic classes, with shifty offshore winds and gusts of up to 34 knots creating challenging racing conditions. While the Nacra 17 and 49erFX fleets completed all three scheduled races, the strengthening breeze forced race officials to curtail the 49er programme after two races.

In the 49erFX fleet, Nicola and Rebecca Hume finished strongly, claiming second place in the final race to climb to 27th overall after three races.

The 49er fleet will look to make up lost ground tonight (NZ time), with four races scheduled as the championship begins to take shape.

In the mixed Nacra 17 class, Micah Wilkinson and new sailing partner Kate Stewart made an encouraging start to just their first European Championship campaign together. Scores of eighth, 20th and sixth leave the pair 11th overall, just outside the top 10.

The duo joined forces after the Paris Olympics, where Wilkinson claimed bronze alongside Erica Dawson, and were pleased with their opening day's work despite identifying areas for improvement.

"We're happy with the opening day," Stewart said. "Our speed is lacking compared to the top group, and we got rolled off the start in the second race, but overall we're happy with the first day. We had a really good day in that upper breeze, which is the conditions we've been struggling in the most."

Wilkinson said strong starts were key to keeping them in the fight.

"We've got to race our pants off to get into the top group, but we nailed our starts in the first and the last races," he said.
