2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championship, Day 3: New Zealand's Chloe Turner surges into podium contention in Aarhus

Chloe Turner has surged six places into the podium positions after three days of racing at the ILCA 6 Youth World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark.

The Murrays Bay Sailing Club sailor started racing ninth overall but produced a superb day on Aarhus Bay, posting back-to-back second-place finishes to move into third overall after six races.

Turner had already shown her medal potential on Day 2 with two top-three results, and her latest performance has firmly put her in the hunt for silverware with two days of racing remaining.

She sits on 22 points, behind Greece’s Hermionie Ghicas on five and Ireland’s Sienna Wright on eight.

Turner was one of several Kiwis to make progress on a challenging day, with the fleet facing shifty westerly winds ranging from 8 to 25 knots.

In the ILCA 6 Youth Men’s fleet, Tom Pilkington remains the leading New Zealander in 15th overall after two top-10 results overnight.

Arran Begic is the next-best Kiwi in 22nd, while Toby Dunn (72nd) and Isaac Gaites (96th) remain inside the top 100.

Thomas Linklater is 130th, followed by Thomas Jurczyluk in 157th and George Turner in 170th.

Lukas Johnson is 210th overall but is sitting just inside the top 50 in the under-17 category.

The men’s fleet is led by Italy’s Lorenzo Ghirotti on nine points, with Croatia’s Toma Smirčić on 10 and Turkey’s Ali Özdemir on 11.

With six races now completed in both fleets, the championship moves into its second half later today (NZ time), with Turner firmly in the medal fight and the Kiwi contingent looking to build on their progress in Aarhus.
