The Timaru Herald reports…
Local identity Joe Butterfield was recognised for services to health and the transport industry.
"I am honoured," he said of the award.
He became involved in health only through being approached to go on the Crown Health Enterprise Board in 1995. Since then he held the chairmanship of the South Canterbury District Health Board from 2000 to 2009 and has been chair of the Southern District Health Board since 2010.
Born and bred in Timaru, Mr Butterfield was a partner in an accounting firm. He retired three years ago but continues to act as a consultant to the firm.
He has also held directorships in companies including Intercity Holdings Ltd, Ritchies Transport Holdings, the Port of Timaru and the South Canterbury Regional Development Board. Chair of the Timaru Harbour Board from 1974 to 1989, Mr Butterfield is a chartered member of the Institute of Logistics and Transport.
He plans to carry on with some directorships but is looking forward to his workload reducing.
He admits he has been very busy over a long period of time.
Mr Butterfield is Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in NZ and of the NZ Institute of Directors, and is a chartered member of the Institute of Logistics and Transport.
Despite many accolades for his work over the years, Mr Butterfield said his time involved in yachting has been the highlight. He served as president of Yachting NZ from 1992 to 1995 and is a life member. From 1994 to 2008 he was its representative on the international body's council.
