Auckland 'beach cats' in action

Issue date

The F18 New Zealand Championships were attempted over the weekend of March 16/17 as part of Sail Akarana, however the sailors got blown off the water on Sunday, so no series was held as only three races were completed on Saturday.

Of the races that were completed, experienced multihull sailors Drew Carlyle and Miranda Powrie led the fleet with Olympic class 49er Sailor Blair Tuke sailing with Vicky Francis just one point behind. Also on the top of their game was the 'young guns' Issac McHardie and Micah Wilkinson who have recently been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2013 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships; they won the last race of the day as the breeze lightened.

There is various debate about what the F18 class will do next, including possibly to try again to finishing the event on another weekend or holding another regatta entirely.  Follow the class blog at www.nzlf18sailing.com

For anybody else who is keen to do some beach cat/tri racing, in ANY KIND OF CAT OR TRI- be sure to go along to Akarana this Sunday (March 24th) and race in the Hyundai Summer Series - bring any beach catamaran or trimaran, they will score the boats on handicap. Racing is 24 March, and the 7th and 14th of April.

Non members welcome, the idea is just to get more boats on the water. The first warning signal is at 1325 hours. Find out more on the RAYC website www.rayc.co.nz/summer-series/
