2013 Auckland Girls Regatta provides product promo opportunity

Issue date

Auckland Girl’s Regatta held at Kohimarama Yacht Club is just around the corner – mark 23 March on your calendar.

Yachting New Zealand Regional Support Officer Kim Admore has been involved for a number of years, and describes the event as a lot of fun, “The regatta has really nice atmosphere around it and everyone who enters comes away with something . Highly recommended.”

Here’s the brief from organisers…

Objective - Recognising girls doing something for themselves.

We want girls to grab the opportunity to be captains of their own destiny.

Girls aged from nine to eighteen are invited to compete in a special sailing event designed to celebrate their sailing.

We are providing a special ‘girls only’ regatta (which has a prestigious reputation in Auckland) where the focus is on the enjoyment of sailing, friendly competition and recognising the efforts and success of girls sailing in this city.

Facts

The event is run by volunteer parents at Kohimarama Yacht Club, a club established in 1940 to teach children to sail and support their dreams, whether simply enjoying Auckland’s wonderful harbour or towards becoming successful Olympic yachtspersons (such as Jo Aleh and Olivia 'Polly' Powrie who learned to sail at this club).

  • Approximately 60 girl sailors will participate in this event
  • Girl sailors will be between of 9 – 17 years of age
  • Boats sailing will be classes from green fleet through open fleet Optimist, P-Class, Starling, Splash, Laser Radial, Bic, 420, Bic Techno and other Yachting New Zealand youth classes.  These are singlehanded boats with the exception of the 420 which is a dual handed boat with skipper and one crew.
  • Event headquarters and launching at Kohimarama Yacht Club, Tamaki Drive, St Heliers, Auckland

Including the event organisers, approximately 100 – 200 adults will attend the event, hang out at the club for the day to watch the sailing and be in attendance for the prize giving at the conclusion of the event.

Exposure opportunities for sponsors: Welcome Packets

When sailors register their regatta attendance at the beginning of the event, they are normally given a packet of information which contains a rules and regulations sheet, and specific instructions about the venue and event.

For this girls regatta, we are going to do something different in the effort to make it more fun and special ……. Along with the standard information, we are creating little gift packets for each sailor, that she will receive when registering for the day.  This packet will include a fresh rose, a flower lei to tie on the boat, a girlie magazine, etc.

We are looking for any other small items to be included in this so it becomes a ‘gift packet’ that will make each girl feel special and create a fun atmosphere for this event (different from other mixed sex regattas).

Spot prizes

Not every girl can be a winner.  Many come to regatta after regatta and sail to the very best of their ability, without any hope of a winning place.  We would like some of these girls to be winners on the day, with spot prizes that recognise the value of competing.

The end prize giving event will be attended by the sailors themselves along with their support people (parents, siblings etc).  It is a good marketing opportunity for your company as we do make a point of acknowledging each sponsor prior to the lucky winner going up and collecting their prize in front of the crowd that is expected to be well over 100 people.
