Keelboat Coach Development

A keelboat coach is a competent and experienced keelboat, multihull or trailer yacht coach who has been trained and assessed in the teaching of sailing to groups. A keelboat coach will be graded level 1, 2 or 3 and can teach to that level of the learn to sail keelboat programme. 

Coaching competence is developed through the two-and-a-half day Keelboat Coach course.

Description

The Keelboat Coach course is for the competent Keelboat, Multihull or Trailer sailor who wishes to pass their knowledge and skills onto new sailors. Whether it be a learning curve to help you in your own sailing, or you want to start running a sailing school from your yacht, this is the course for you with three attainable levels.  

On completion of the Yachting New Zealand Keelboat Coach course, a coach will be able to:

  • Manage risks and be aware of safety issues related to sailing a Keelboat
  • Be aware of the importance of experience and have commitment to furthering one’s experience
  • Be committed and have the ability to deliver Yachting New Zealand’s Keelboat scheme at Level 1, 2, and/or 3 (dependent on the attainment level achieved)
  • Show competence in practical aspects of sailing a keelboat 
How long does it take? 

Typically the Keelboat Coach Course totals around 20 hours and is run over two days sailing, and one evening. 

Prerequisites required 
  • Applicants must be competent at skippering a keelboat
  • 16 years of age (inclusive)
  • Under 18 years of age will require pre-approval from Yachting New Zealand

 Assessment

You will be assessed by the facilitator throughout the course on different aspects, and they will grade you as to which level of the Yachting New Zealand Keelboat scheme you will be able to coach. The facilitator will guide you through what they are looking for on the course.
