Women’s Match Racing World Championship: Kiwis still in contention after tougher day two

Issue date

Megan Thomson and her 2.0 Racing Team are right in the mix at the 2025 Women’s Match Racing World Championship in Chicago, finishing day two tied on seven wins with France’s Pauline Courtois.

The New Zealander and her crew of Tiana Wittey, Josi Andres, Charlotte Porter and Hattie Rogers opened the regatta strongly with four wins from four races on the first day but found conditions more challenging overnight (NZ time).

Thomson added three more victories but suffered defeats against Courtois and Dutch skipper Julia Aartsen (Team Out of the Box). Defending champion Courtois remains unbeaten, while Sweden’s Anna Östling and her WINGS Sailing Team ended the day on six wins and two losses.

Fellow Kiwi Celia Willison and her Edge Women’s Match crew consisting of Clare Costanzo, Phoebe Buckland, Serena Woodall and Ruby Scholten sit further back with one win from six races, leaving them work to do to reach the quarter-finals.

The twelve teams faced a sloppy short swell and shifting breeze, forcing race officials to move the course a mile offshore to find steadier conditions. Eleven flights were completed before sunset, with tomorrow’s final round-robin matches set to decide who advances to the knockout stages.
