Scholarship available for Nespresso youth training week

Issue date

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s annual Nespresso National Youth Training Week is now in its 29th year and the December event is fast-approaching and Nespresso are offering a scholarship for one young sailor.

Promising young sailing talent, mentored by aspiring sailors from around New Zealand, will converge on Kawau Island for the week-long intensive course which will see participants “simply eating, sleeping and sailing”, said RNZYS general manager Hayden Porter.

Thanks to Nespresso – a key supporter of sailing in New Zealand – an opportunity has been created for one deserving, young sailor who has applied to receive their fee paid for via the Nespresso Scholarship.

Applications are open now for this training week scholarship and applicants are asked to send in a 100-word max paragraph on why they should be selected. The National Youth Training Week began in 1989 and has grown in popularity year on year.

“The learning curve is very steep and there’s a lot of training to get through," Porter said. "The participants are mentored by members of the Youth Training Programme, a year-long regime covering every element of sailing on and off the water each weekend.

“Raw talent, a dedicated coaching programme and sponsorship from partners like Nespresso, continues to cement New Zealand’s top spot in global youth sailing.”

Past Nespresso National Youth Training Week participants include Brad Farrand and Bianca Cook, who both recently completed the Volvo Ocean Race.

John Ciaglia, country manager for Nespresso New Zealand, is proud to renew their support of the National Youth Training Week for a fifth year. “A long-standing supporter the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Youth Training Programme which is world renowned as the best youth sailing pathway in the world. We’re now in our fifth year of sponsoring the Youth Training Week and are pleased to be able to support New Zealand’s budding young talent as they set out to compete on the global stage.”
