A good fleet of 21 P-class fronted up at the Bay of Islands Yacht Club to contest the2015 P Class North Island Championships. The seven race regatta was held over Labour weekend. After registration on Saturday morning the fleet was out to the race track in the drizzly northerly conditions. Francesco Kayrouz (WBC) was off to a good start with a couple of wins in the first two races, Henry Wilson (MBSC) and the local boy James Sheldon( BOIYC) were keeping the game pretty close.

Day two the clouds lifted, the breeze went around to the south and a lovely 12-18knt breeze. Big wind shifts and the tide were challenging for all the sailors. James Sheldon worked the shifts and tides well to pick up a couple of bullets to give him a 5 point jump on the rest of the fleet after the drop. Blake McGlashan (MBSC) moved up to 2nd with some consistent performances and Francesco slip to 3rd place.
Day three with a glass bay left the race management wondering whether the sea breeze might push the southerly back. A few clouds came up from the south and gave the true breeze a chance to build. After a 45min delay we were racing in some pretty tricky conditions with large holes and big shifts, which had the management team on their toes for both races. The local boys did well in these conditions with James picking up another bullet and Jack Honey (BOIYC) winning the last race.

The Bay of Islands Yacht Club put on a great regatta and the Tanner (9th-11th) and Tauranga Cup(12th-15th) regattas will be the event to be at in January. This is a fantastic venue with challenging conditions which will reward those sailors who sail smart on the water. The Club is also running the Starling North Islands (16th 17th January) after the P class event.
The team at BOIYC will make sure that all the sailors and parents who attend these regatta will be part of an event that they will remember as a great experience for a long time.
