Fun Sailing at Kerikeri Cruising Club

Issue date

Following on from Kate Spackman’s news of their very successful learn to sail programme in Christchurch, there is a similar set up at the other end of the country in Kerikeri.

We have of course a very much easier situation here and presumably there are lots of other equally effective clubs in between our South and North extremes. However for interest included are a couple of shots of our learn to sail programme.

We are very lucky to have a “nursery” site on a very convenient lake where we store 35 dinghies of 7 different varieties, plus assorted safety boats. We have up to 40 sailors on our list including a number of parents both experienced helping sailors /coaches and learners, a real family approach.

We sail every Saturday during school terms one and four. As sailors become more confident they move on to the sea at Dove’s Bay into various class boats, for club regattas the School team 420s training for the NZTSA regattas and or crews on keel boats.

A very keen few have gone on to great heights. We have also had a very successful dinghy cruising event trying to copy Janet Watkins’ examples.
