- Dave was a coach for Tom Ashley in the build up to Tom becoming Olympic champion in 2008. Dave then coached Tom and the womens RSX squad leading up to the 2012 Olympics and recently he has been coaching the RSX youth team, 49er FX and 49er sailors. Q) How did you get into coaching? A) I started at 16 with Optimists at my local club and really enjoyed it. I then progressed into coaching the Techno class, attending the Worlds as a coach on a PM scholarship. When I finished competing, Tom asked me to coach him in the RSX windsurfer.
- Tactics in sailing are a difficult enough subject, but even harder to explain as a coach to your sailors in training. Especially training in a small group, trying to replicate the decision making of sailing a fleet. Mark Rushall’s Tactics book is an excellent read with plenty of pictures and diagrams to help visualize real life situations.
- The Cercle Nautique Calédonien want to hear from kiwi crews interested in taking part in the New Caledonia Match Race. New Zealand teams, Australia teams, New Caledonia teams are giving their expression of interest. Last Year Chris Steele from Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron won the event.
- Emirates Team New Zealand has exercised its option to skip the Louis Vuitton Cup semi-finals and go straight to the final.
- Andrew Murdoch (pictured) has secured his first medal at a major international Finn regatta with bronze at the 2013 Finn European Championship just finished in Warnemunde, Germany. New Zealand boasts two top five finishers at the Championship with Josh Junior concluding the regatta in 5th place.
